Staying loyal and getting on

Ever since they entered parliament in 1997, the voting of the large cohort of women MPs has been a topic of contention. This short briefing note (pdf, 99k) updates the data on the women MPs’ voting, as well as showing one lesser-noticed consequence of their behaviour: they’ve been more likely to be promoted as a result. Disproportionate loyalty in the division lobbies has meant disproportionate entry into government.
