Chief Whip

The former Chief Whip, Tim (now Lord) Renton has just published an excellent book on the role of the Chief Whip, including his account of his time in the role between 1989 and 1990. Although much of the coverage of the book has concentrated on the revelation that he did not vote for Mrs Thatcher in the crucial first round vote in November 1990, much of the book is also fascinating material for those interested in parliamentary whipping. A review of the book, forthcoming in the Journal of Legislative Studies, is available from here (pdf, 40k).
