Rates of rebellion, 1945-2014

In advance of today’s expected rebellions over the Immigration Bill, here is a chart – taken from a presentation given yesterday to the MacDougall Trust – to put it all in some context.  It shows the percentage of divisions in the Commons to see at least one government MP defy their whip, in every session from 1945 onwards.  Data for the current session accurate as of a week ago.  It’s doesn’t need much more explanation than that.  The current Parliament – taken together since 2010 – is on course to be the most rebellious of the post war era.
